Sound for Nurse Jackie

Gotham Sound, in conjuction with Tekserve and Avid, hosted a live event talk by the Production Sound Mixer and Supervising Sound Editor for the TV show Nurse Jackie. The show is based in a hospital environment primarily, which can be a challenging environment for sound. The talk discussed many of the aspects to capturing and producing great sound in this scenario. Fortunately a video from the event has been posted online and you can check it out here:

Some key points in the video:

Production Sound

  • 13:20 – The Interview
  • 20:15 – The Sound Report

Post-Production Sound

  • 36:51 – Project Management
  • 38:25 – Workflow
  • 45:10 – 5 ways to not be dumb
  • 51:00 – Conforming in Pro Tools

Some of the later post session examples from around 55 minutes aren’t as effective because we don’t get to see or hear the clips due to licensing restrictions, but it is otherwise an interesting presentation to check out.

In the Q and A part they discuss some things including room tone. I have to admit I was surprised to hear that they don’t get room tone specifically on location. If I don’t get room tones from shoots when I am working on post it bugs me. Sure, you can edit a bigger chunk out of a smaller bit in most circumstances, but it takes unnecessary time and is a compromise in quality compared to a proper room tone recording in my opinion.
