Yesterday we went into Arc Cinema at the National Film and Sound Archive for what was meant to be the final day of mixing. The Arc Cinema is a beautiful, well-specced 250 seater theatre in a nice art deco style. You can check out more about the theatre at:

It was really great to experience hearing the film in a 5.1 surround large cinema environment for the first time. The idea was that this would be the final mix day, where we should just be making some minor tweaks in the large space. The reality was that we didn’t quite complete the mix yesterday. There were a couple of factors leading to this, including the final music arriving a bit later than hoped, and then some interesting technical issues with the AAF import to deal with. Another issue was that upon hearing and seeing the film in the cinema, the Director decided that a couple of things weren’t working that well, including a couple of music cues and the Narrator’s VO performance/aesthetic. There are also a few visual issues to deal with from what I can tell as well.
So despite not quite having finished the mix, I feel we are very close. I was hoping for a relaxing weekend after a busy post period, but today I have recorded a new Narrator VO (with new/different Narrator talent) and also gone out to pick up an additional line of dialogue that was originally edited out of the cut, but now placed back in in a nicer way.
I have some mix notes, and on Monday morning I’ll go in and tweak a few things with the Re-Recording Mixer, including adding in the new audio. The Director will be in then on Monday afternoon/evening and hopefully the mix will get completed at that point.
