SB Feature Film Post Blog Post 5

It’s been about a week since my last blog post about the SB feature film project. Things are progressing fairly well, although I have been a little slower to get where I am than hoped as I ended up on a location sound job for a couple of days early in the week.

I have now got a first pass of the dialogue edit, and have a master session with the Foley that had been completed up until Tuesday in it too. In my master session I have clip groups marking out all my cues for Foley, SFX, and backgrounds.

Dialogue – First pass dialogue edit is done. We have re-recorded a few lines for a small girl where the intelligibility was poor due to her voice, and added in some new dialogue for a surreal dream sequence part.

Foley – The Foley team have done a great job so far, and have knocked over a fair chunk of the work required on that front. I have given the Foley team an updated cue list which should cover everything else required of them now, which is mostly footsteps.

SFX – I haven’t really gotten on to any specific sound effects or sound design stuff yet, although Duncan has come up with a cool synth subby sound for a few flashback type scenes. Tomorrow we have lined up to record some car crashing! The business downstairs from the studio is a scrap car place, and they are up for smashing some things for us to record. A great opportunity that I’m really looking forward to. I just hope that the weather is good enough to go ahead with it, as some rain is forecast.

Backgrounds – I have placed the backgrounds from production and have spotted all required backgrounds. I want to replace or supplement a lot of it.

The plan for today is to:

  • Find some existing backgrounds to add to the session;
  • Export a current dialogue and effects stereo mix as well as a separate stem for the music songs as opposed to underscore to provide to both the Foley team and the Composer;
  • Organise a time to record some cars next week for some specific moves and interior ambiences.
